This book describes the ethnopsychology and ethnopsychiatry of the Kanaké of the linguistic country and
customary Paicî-Camuki of New Caledonia. The Kanaké advocate the loss of aspects
past of the relationship with deceased loved ones and the creation of new links with them in
as ancestors. Each time the past bond remains too strong, putting loved ones in danger through
sustained presence of ancestors, traditional practitioners and Kanaké initiates can act on the world
invisible to preserve the living by breaking the link. Through the story of Sunia, I examine
how mourners navigate these norms and resources to develop
unique adaptation solutions.
